An art award with an eerie namesake

A prestigious art award, a prize pool of more than $60,000 and - a ghost?

Named after the legendary ghost of once Campbelltown local, Frederick Fisher, the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award is a pivotal part of the Campbelltown Art Centre’s artistic program.

In its 63rd year, the Award has attracted over 1,500 submissions from artists of all ages across Western Sydney and beyond. Visitors to the Campbelltown Arts Centre can now peruse the finalists in each of the five categories: open, contemporary, traditional, primary students and secondary students.

Expect the unexpected in the open and contemporary categories. In one corner, a dropped set of keys are magnified and brought to life in all their metallic detail. In another, a larger-than-life page of a notepad cascades down the gallery wall onto the floor. On it, a list of nouns used to define a woman’s relationship with others throughout life are progressively crossed off.

For those with a passion for time-honoured techniques, the traditional category offers an abundance of still lifes, portraits and landscapes. Among them, expansive outlooks of natural landscapes and urban structures are exhibited alongside views of table settings and cosy room interiors.

The talents of youth entrants are also on display throughout the primary students and secondary students categories. Colour dominates as student artists depict everything from themselves to their loved ones, everyday life and the natural world.

While the recipients of each award, including the top $50,000 acquisitive open award, are still a mystery, visitors can embody the spirit of the art critic and vote for their favourite work in the Peoples’ Choice Award.

The Fisher’s Ghost Art Award Exhibition runs at Campbelltown Arts Centre from 27 September until 16 November 2025. Voting for the Peoples’ Choice Award closes on 26 October 2025, with all award recipients to be announced on 31 October 2025.
